Create the commute

If you're working from home and struggling to get your steps in, then here is a perfect way to create a routine that will get you into the work mindset and help you distinguish between work time and play time.

The pandemic has highlighted the different hats a single person juggles. From family to professional these hats rarely collided. Getting up in the morning and heading out the door the work hat slowly descended. Meetings and tasks for the day ahead laid themselves out in a roll call of priority. This meant there was time to process the day ahead and "become" professional.

Leaving the house, the warm comforts are left behind and the sharp contrast of the outdoors quickly focuses your movements. You fall into the same habits, steps from your front door and the hats start to change.

Whist working from home this time gets robbed, the walk from the bedroom to the kitchen table is a bluury shuffle. No contrasting air to sharpen the mind and no steps outside the house to change hats.

Instead try this; Get up and dressed and get out the door 10-15 minutes before work. Open the front door and start to get the routine of the old commute back. Head out the door for a 15 minute walk and it will change everything. You'll come back invigorated and having done extra steps. Reverse this in the evening and you have built in a sustainable healthy habit that you can build on.
